UK theory test pass mark 2026: 43 out of 50, plus 44 out of 75
The UK driving theory test has two parts. To pass overall, you must pass both in the same sitting. Here are the exact numbers, what they mean, and the easy ways people lose marks they could have kept.
The headline numbers
- Multiple-choice section: 50 questions, 57 minutes, pass mark 43 out of 50 (86%).
- Hazard perception section: 14 video clips containing 15 hazards, pass mark 44 out of 75 (about 59%).
- You must pass both on the same day. Pass one, fail the other and you have to redo the whole test.
Why the multiple-choice pass mark is so high (86%)
A 43/50 pass mark means you can get only 7 wrong out of 50. That's tight, but the test isn't trying to trick you. The questions are based on the Highway Code, the official "Know Your Traffic Signs" guide, and the DVSA's "Essential Skills" book. Practise from those and the percentage works for you, not against.
The single biggest reason people fail the multiple-choice is under-revising one or two topics like Vehicle Loading, Documents or Other Types of Vehicle. The test draws from all 14 topics, so a weak spot can cost you 4-5 questions on its own.
How the hazard perception scoring works
You watch 14 short video clips from the driver's point of view. As soon as you spot a hazard developing, you click. The earlier you click during the scoring window, the more points you get:
- Earliest click in the scoring window: 5 points
- Slightly later: 4 points
- Mid-window: 3 points
- Late: 2 points
- Very late: 1 point
- Missed: 0 points
There are 15 hazards in 14 clips (one clip has two). Maximum score is 5 × 15 = 75. Pass mark is 44.
The big trap: clicking too often. The test detects spamming clicks (a "click pattern") and gives you zero for that clip. Don't try to game it.
What happens if you fail?
- You have to wait 3 working days before booking another attempt.
- Each retake costs £23 (2026 GOV.UK fee).
- There's no limit on attempts, but they add up fast.
The 2-year rule
When you pass, your certificate is valid for 2 years. You must pass your practical driving test within that window or you'll have to retake theory.
The fastest way to revise for both sections
- Do a cold mock first to see your weak topics. Free unlimited mocks here.
- Spend most of your time on whichever 2-3 topics scored lowest.
- Do at least one hazard perception clip every day for 2 weeks. The clicking-timing skill needs reps, not theory.
- Re-take a mock the day before. If you score above 46/50, you're ready.
