How to pass the UK driving theory test first time
The UK driving theory test trips up more than half of the people who sit it. The good news: it is very passable with the right preparation. Here is a simple plan that works.
How the test works
There are two parts, and you must pass both on the same day:
- Multiple choice: 50 questions, pass mark 43. You have 57 minutes.
- Hazard perception: 14 video clips, you click when you spot a developing hazard. Pass mark 44 out of 75.
A simple three-week plan
Week 1 - learn the topics
Work through a couple of topics a day. Read the explanation for every answer, even the ones you get right. Understanding beats memorising.
Week 2 - mock tests
Start taking full mock tests under the timer. Note the topics you keep getting wrong and go back to them.
Week 3 - polish and hazard perception
Keep mocking until you pass comfortably (47+), and practise hazard perception clips so the clicking feels natural.
The most common mistakes
- Only memorising answers. The real test rephrases questions. Learn the rule, not the letter.
- Skipping hazard perception. Many people fail on this half because they never practised the clicking.
- Cramming the night before. Little and often sticks far better.
On the day
Bring your provisional licence, arrive early, and read each question twice. You can flag questions and come back to them, so do not get stuck. Stay calm during hazard perception and click once or twice as a hazard develops - do not spam clicks (more on that in our hazard perception guide).
